The Heretic's Daughter

I love tales about the witch trials and those that were accused. I think this may have started some of my liking of all things paranormal. Witches fall into that category for me.....in most cases. In the spirit of Halloween and all things witchy, I have 5 copies of The Heretic's Daughter to give away!

From the Hachett Website: Martha Carrier was one of the first women to be accused, tried and hanged as a witch in Salem, Massachusetts. Like her mother, young Sarah Carrier is bright and willful, openly challenging the small, brutal world in which they live. Often at odds with one another, mother and daughter are forced to stand together against the escalating hysteria of the trials and the superstitious tyranny that led to the torture and imprisonment of more than 200 people accused of witchcraft. This is the story of Martha's courageous defiance and ultimate death, as told by the daughter who survived.
Kathleen Kent is a tenth generation descendent of Martha Carrier. She paints a haunting portrait, not just of Puritan New England, but also of one family's deep and abiding love in the face of fear and persecution.

I'm a follower.

For some reason this form isn't letting me paste links. I tried reseting it too. boo.

I shared your post on facebook.

I tweeted. www.twitter.com/chedderfish (I really need to figure out the individual tweet thing)

And I'll admit I actually enjoyed Practical Magic. On the other end of the spectrum I liked the Craft and at this time of year I have to remember Hocus Pocus for the giggles. Yes, they are all mainstream but they are the first 3 that come to mind. I can't say I read/watched a lot of witch specific stuff before.

+3 I really enjoyed Kim Harrison's series about Rachel Morgan (up until the 7th book, that one kind of dragged for me but I did finish it) and The Witch Of Blackbird Pond was a book i loved in elelmtary school and have kept around to reread every few years or so.

This book looks so interesting. I'll be crossing my fingers and maybe twitching my nose!

Yano, I thought I was already following you, but I wasn't, so now I am. :P

I also posted this Tweet: http://twitter.com/CupK8/status/5151978343

My favorite witch story will always be Macbeth. The recent Folger Shakespeare production (co-directed by Teller of Penn & Teller) has the creepiest witches EVAR. It's not nearly as cool on DVD as it was live, I hear, but it still freaked me out. And, on a completely different note, Wicked is pretty amazing - different view of witches, but yeah. Also L. Frank Baum's original Oz books - witches galore!

I read books they way other people eat, sleep, or watch movies....voraciously, obsessively, and as often as possible. The reviews, random commentary, and snark in this blog are mine alone. Don't take my word...read the book.
