Mash-up Craziness

Title: Pride and Prejudice and Zombies
Author(s): Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith
Genre: Romance, Zombies

I'm hemming and hawing here (also, that is quite possibly the first time I've ever written that phrase). I am so torn about writing this review. I'm really disappointed....primarily in myself. See, I don't like J
ane Austen's writing style. Not. At. All. In fact, to give you an idea, I don't even work with her novels with my English classes. There are at least four years of high school seniors who have not even read excerpts thanks to my inability to not go cross-eyed when reading her work. Anyway, I was hoping.....crazy hoping....that the additional story and stuff with the zombies would make this story infinitely more interesting to me. Unfortunately, I can't say it did. At times I was interested in where the parts with/about the zombies were going, and the idea of the girls having to be changed some due to circumstances. But the words just kept getting in the way. In the way, I say! I don't know why, I just can't get into it. Actually, I do know why. The smash-up author did a pretty good job (minus those couple lines that just made grown allowed and roll my eyes roll back in my head) keeping with Ms. Austen's style. It's pretty impressive actually. That's the downfall for me though. Sadly, it doesn't seem to matter that there are now zombies and the girls are phenomenal slayers. I couldn't even finish it. *insert massive pouty face here*

Worth a try if you are a zombie novel fan, even more worth it if you do like Jane Austen novels, to be avoided in Austen bores you to tears.

Actually - from what I have heard anyway - people who do like Austen really don't like how this was done. They feel like what had potential to be awesome turned out to be lame, because the new author was pretty random and thoughtless with his insertions. I haven't read it yet, so I can't say for sure - and I do like Austin. =)

Ya know, I could see how they say it was random. In the part I read, I spent a lot of time trying to figure out if they'd changed certain lines or not. Other times it was shocking how badly the new author had missed the point....I'm thinking specifically of a part where the girls talk about flirting with and persuading men with their(the girls) sexuality...in front of the parents. Hello? Not going to happen, especially not with these girls...zombie outbreak or not. Could likely be part of my problem.

I have to admit that I am also not the biggest Austen fan. I read Sense and Sensibility and was so glad when I finally finished it. But I really liked P&P&Z. Was it corny? Yep. Sometimes outright stupid? Yep. Did I laugh out loud? Yep. Good times :)

I can see that. I couldn't get past the style to complete the book, but what I did read was fun. I'm not going to skip the other mash-ups that are coming....even though it pains me to think I'll have to read PP again with the "Mr. Darcy, Vampyre" that's coming out soonish.

Thank you for the review!

I read books they way other people eat, sleep, or watch movies....voraciously, obsessively, and as often as possible. The reviews, random commentary, and snark in this blog are mine alone. Don't take my word...read the book.
